Back in May when I shot for the Lightfactory Shootout, I photographed a couple and the guy, Clarke, I discovered, was a hot air balloonist! Since taking a ride in a hot air balloon is on my list of 101 goals to complete in 1001 days, I invited myself for a ride someday and we corresponded back and forth about upcoming festivals where we might be able to make that happen.
The Carolina Balloon Fest was the only Saturday I was free, so I marked it reserved on my calendar and looked forward to a little fall weekend vacation as wedding season would be wrapping up with the possibility of marking off one of my goals!
My brother and his lovely girlfriend Katie also came up for a visit the same weekend and we made a little afternoon out of it.
Long story short, I ended up forgetting the paper I wrote their phone number down on so I couldn’t call them when I arrived (and since I’m lame and don’t have a smart phone I couldn’t look it up)… I walked the huge field of vans and trucks several times and couldn’t spot them… and then by the time the balloons started inflating there was so much chaos that I couldn’t even see all the balloons to be able to pick out his from the description I was given. But it was all okay, it was a fun experience and a relaxing day, and we had decided to go to Scarowinds that evening anyway and would have been really really late getting there if I had been riding off into nowhere:)
Love the shot below on the right…
We were pretty much right underneath all the balloons when they started taking off… it was fun having them looming overhead so much larger than I had imagined them to be and you could literally feel the heat from the burners as they were blowing up!
Yay! Hopefully I’ll get to catch a future festival and get to ride! Or I’ll just have to hire someone to take me up before my 1001 days runs out in July!
