Road Trip 2011 – Day 43 – Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower & Middle Fork Campground, Bighorn National Forest WY

From the Badlands the main destination was Gillette.  I really wanted to check out the city, but when we got there it was late and I was tired and just not feeling like sticking around.  So, we headed on to Bighorn National Forest to try to find a campground.  But… before we got to Gillette or the forest, we stopped at Mount Rushmore and Devil’s Tower National Monument!

Again, when we got to our campground, Middle Fork, it was dark and we couldn’t see anything, but we could hear what sounded like a roaring river right outside the car.  It was also FREEZING cold.  We’ve encountered a ton of cold weather on this trip.  I didn’t pack many warm things…I have a whole backseat full of tank tops and thin shirts and shorts and skirts.  I feel like it’s not Summer yet most of the time.  Which, I guess it’s technically still Spring during this point.  Anyway… when we woke up we had a great little spot right on the river and when we left the forest, we could see that all the mountains around us were covered in snow.  No wonder it was so cold!
